If a paper becomes unpublishable after constructive reviews, it suggests that 1) all editors involved are unable to evaluate criticism fairly, or 2) serious flaws have been surfaced, in which case they are best addressed by authors.

If the reviews are off-base, authors (or other experts) can also rebut them publicly, advancing the conversation that might otherwise be repeated in a private review process.
