Explanation of whyI am the only one of 7 billion people to not endorse cyber as a warfare domain. https://twitter.com/hacks4pancakes/status/1340676310058844163
For over a decade, I’ve watched people who don’t really understand how the internet works at all be told by people who do that it is a warfare domain, then try to visualize it merely as a Tron digital battlefield with electronic soldiers defending a hill. Which becomes rhetoric.
It’s not. It’s an internet. Computers are computers. If you get this well it can certainly be a “domain” to defend. If you don’t, it becomes a hideous miscommunication that amplifies dangerous and incorrect analogies to conventional infantry and air warfare.
I hate to tell you this sad secret, but billions of people who know their jobs and fields very well do not understand how the internet works at all. Just like billions of people drive cars and motorcycles without knowing how internal combustion engines work. It’s magic.
Big theoretical concepts about what the internet is, how it works, and what that means for future conflict? Those are tough stuff. Give yourself a big pat on the back if you even begin to grasp the questions.
Anyway in conclusion of my blazing hot TED talk take, this is why the unfortunate term, “cyber Pearl Harbor” exists. 🤷🏻‍♀️🍸
