It is a myth that every Indian pays a tax. People highlight #GST as an example but ignore the way GST was structured. That is, it has a list of exemptions and lower tax rate for consumption goods by the relatively weaker section of the society.
No, I am not advocating for a single #GST rate. But I am simply stating a fact that the burden of taxation, whether direct or indirect falls on a very narrow section of the population. This is a reality that must be recognized and we must accept this as a limitation.
Therefore, those that are beneficiaries of the largesse of the taxpayers in the form of subsidies can be at the very least grateful. After all, this narrow group that finance these subsidies and the state expenditure benefit little as they look to private sector for key services.
That is, for their education, they look at the private sector, for healthcare too they look at the private sector. This despite the fact that public education and healthcare is largely financed by the tax revenues generated from their income/consumption.
So it would be nice if for once those sitting on these protests realize that they are disrupting economic activity that ends up financing the subsidies that they receive.
