I feel like there’s a semantic error somewhere. The reason people are upset about Star Trek isn’t that it’s “political” so saying “It’s always been political” doesn’t address it. The issue is that Star Trek used to be moral. It was about equality and raising the bar for humanity.
New Star Trek is about clumsily handling modern day talking points and just kind of saying “you need to subscribe to this month’s woke talking point” in a way that isn’t believable for a story set in the future. It also has a lot of explosions and illegal activity for some reason
TOS inspired people to go “hey, look they let a black person right there were all the important people are and they’re all equal” and “hey look they got a flip phone, I want to invent that” and DSC is like “LOOK AT THIS GAY PERSON” and gay people are like “I can do better”
Also, Picard is just objectively poorly written. The story doesn’t make sense and everyone with a familiar face acts out of character. Complain about women or gays or whatever you want, the core issue with that show is that it’s high budget and low thought.
