Good day guys! I want you to learn some business lessons from what I am about to share. September 2016, some few days after my birthday,my friend and I wanted to be sure that an idea I conceived could work. So from the Fadeyi end of Ikorodu road we boarded the normal yellow taxi
to Ketu.We were shocked when the AC came on and the interior of the car was very neat. We immediately started a conversation with the driver. "You should be the only yellow cab in Lagos with a working AC". He looked at us and responded with a NO. We asked a lot of questions
that day and the man gave us the answers we needed. He gave us the address of the Lagos state headquarters for Yellow Taxis. He said something in Yoruba that confirmed to us that they needed revival. "Awon UBER yen ti gba ise mo wa l'owo" literally meaning is that UBER has made
sales dull for them. We concluded on creating an UBER-LIKE yellow cab app. The question is how do we go about this? So I met a young guy that knows how to code and scheduled a meeting with the three of us. We promised to float a company that we will all have equal stakes.
The guy told us that he needed four months to complete the project and he would need funds. Before releasing funds to him, we needed a USP(Unique Selling Preposition). What will.make ours stand out from UBER or Taxify(now Bolt)? We concluded that most people love to bargain in
Nigeria. If we introduce a feature that is common with Yellow taxis already but using technology to enhance it, we wouldn't go wrong. The next thing is what name should we give our own? We came up with T-CAB. The name actually means "Taxi- Cab" but we can't use it that way. We
resolved to using T-CAB. So we released funds to our tech guy and he started building the app. Almost four months into the app development, the guy told us that he met someone that is willing to pay N15m for the app but we won't have any bargaining feature. It didn't go down
well with us because we "felt" the feature will sell us more. Five months into the development, the guy changed his address and decided not to pick our calls. Apparently, he had collected N15m from the man he met and sold the app to him. We called for months unending but didn't
get through. I was driving some months after and saw this guy. I stopped and told him how worried we had been. His response was, "my family kept calling me to give them some money. After I gave them some, they kept calling me and I had to change my phone number." What about the
address you changed suddenly? "My rent was due and I had to get another apartment". So what's up with the app? "I will let you know when I am done".
Those were his words and I guess you all can deduce.
I called my friend to explain to him and he was so angry. We lost money and
time.
Due to this set back we were "desperate" to get things done. So we started looking for developers to start all over again. Mind you, I came from an agricultural background, my other friend is a great graphics designer. We are just passionate about solving problems and
making money from it.
Year 2018, we met a new developer. He was 22 years as at then. He was a good frontend development and has little knowledge about backend development. He built T-CAB application and we launched.
We didn't know that we had just started another phase of
difficulties.
I will stop here now and continue tomorrow. Did we succeed? How did we overcome our challenges? Did we overcome them?
I will gist you tomorrow. I love you guys.
