It’s really sad how football Twitter discredits legends using stats. Don’t get me wrong, stats are good but having better stats doesn’t make you a better player {THREAD}
Back in the day football was more about the team, no one chased individual stats! If only these legends knew, they’d be having better stats today.
I’m pretty sure funny convos and debates would evolve in future cos these young lads are chasing stats straight from the academy!
The likes of Iniesta, Zidane, Ronaldinho are not given the respect due them cos their stats aren’t good enough!
Let’s delve deeper, Liverpool scored 7-0. Why exactly would Mane who plays almost ever Liverpool game be that angry at being subbed at 3-0 when he knows games would be coming in fast and thick at this time of the season? Stats.
Salah came on scored 2, assisted 1..these goals will certainly be added to his stats in every convo but the importance of those goals may never be pronounced. Those goals certainly don’t compare to Raheem Sterling’s goal vs Southampton yesterday.
I’ve observed with keen interest, a few debates on here. For example the Salah vs Hazard debate. Both are exceptional players, don’t get me wrong in my next few lines...I absolutely love both but if you compare both solely on stats then you’re a livescore fan
One thing is certain, Salah would definitely not reproduce these numbers in the Chelsea teams of the Hazard era (2013-2019), Mane might but certainly not Mo.
There is a reason, Hazard won man of the match in the WC quarters vs Brazil without a single goal contribution. Football. In as much as Hazard is a good player, he has not evolved to match the demands of football today (stats)
Forget the fact that he played under too many coaches in a few years with varying systems, mostly defensive but Hazard is not a forward. Well on paper he is but he likes to play like the old wingers, likes to make the pass before the assist or assist himself.
He likes to hold on to the ball, you could count the number of tap in goals he has scored in his career because he barely makes runs of the ball. In as much as the chelsea team needed his style, he needed to evolve like Cr7
Hazard is a great player, Salah is a great player too but I’d rather not be in a situation of comparing them. In the end it bores down to preference and your idea of football but stats certainly don’t do justice and that’s what my write-up is about.
Very soon, I’m sure if players like Mbappe, Haaland keep up their scoring pace...there’s no way you’ll keep them in the same room with some of these legends
It’s sad a team/ beautiful sport is gradually looking some element of it because of stats. Stats is definitely good for the game but not the way to go about these comparisons. Certainly a no for me.
