Then the virus would mutate, be initially more infectious, but be less virulent and fewer would die. It would then become endemic in the population, with occasional local resurgences and some associated deaths.

We saw this with MERS, SARS, H1N1 and all the other newly emerging diseases. The Covid virus is no different and none of the public health measures are going to affect its evolution.
The only effective blocker is immunisation and subsequent herd immunity.

Now if I know all that, why don't the Government advisers know it too?
I suspect the latest lockdown measures will make little difference to hospital admissions and the death rate, while destroying the prosperity and mental health of hundreds of thousands of the population.”
