In a public health emergency, it is prudent to choose a policy which does not rile and upset half the population. ‘Closing the border’ rather than just saying ‘don’t travel out of your LA’ is an example of where Sturgeon has put nationalism before health outcomes.
Asking people to stay within their local authority boundaries would have prevented travel without invoking the controversial border issue, which just alienates people. So why do it? The only reason can be separatism and I find that pretty abhorrent in these desperate times.
We now have a situation where potentially half the population are rebelling because they feel this is a nationalist ploy and not a public health measure. Twitter is full of people saying ‘she can’t stop me going to England’ etc. This was foreseeable and bad policy.
This is especially true as flights from all over the world continue to land in Scotland (including flights from England and rUK). People see the contradiction and it angers them even more. You can’t lose the room like this just to throw some raw meat to your supporters.
Add to this Police Scotland saying they won’t be stopping cars at border and you have a public health policy that has angered some of your citizens, is incomprehensible and unenforceable. But Sturgeon doesn’t care because her hardcore support are wetting themselves with joy.
And to those asking 'where is the opposition?' - here's one 🙄 https://twitter.com/ProfTomkins/status/1340366005604892673?s=20
