The situation Arsenal are currently in is identical to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2008/09 season. Tottenham started the season with Juande Ramos in charge following him from taking over during the 2007/08 season where he took over from Martin Jol following a horrendous start.
Tottenham were left in 18th, only 1 point above 20th place when Jol got sacked and Juande Ramos took over pushing Tottenham up the table to finish in a respectable 11th place while also winning a domestic trophy in his first season (as did Arteta with his FA Cup win)
Now we move forward to the start of the 2008/09 season. Ramos looked to build on his good work from the previous season with signings of Modric, Bentley, Pavlyuchenko, Giovani and many more. At this point, Tottenham fans were expecting Ramos to push on from his League Cup win.
Tottenham started that season with a very talented squad and asperations to finish in a European spot and possibly even challenge for Top 4. 8 games later, Tottenham were sitting bottom of the Premier League with 0 wins and 6 losses and Juande Ramos was sacked immediately.
Harry Redknapp took over with a mountain to climb with Tottenham still having ambitions of a European finish. By the end of the season, Tottenham finished 8th, 2 points off a European spot after losing 3-1 to Liverpool on the final day that could've seen Tottenham finish 7th.
Harry Redknapp then stayed in charge for a further 3 season where he did extremely well, finishing 4th, 5th and then 4th again.
