ACT CHO is up. I think that is everybody. Each State. And. Territory has moved rapidly in the absence* of federal political leadership. Morrison is on holidays. McCormack has said nothing.
*3 minute video of the prime minister talking shit that his team posted on insta.
Dr Karen Coleman (ACT CHO) will be signing an order for enforceable quarantine requirements from 11:59pm tonight. ACT borders will effectively be closed to people in Greater Sydney including Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Nepean, Blue Mountains and Central Coast.
exemptions will not be considered by ACT Health except in the most exceptional circumstances. ACT residents can return and quarantine at home. Greater Sydney residents are not to enter the ACT.
the orders closing ACT borders to people from Greater Sydney could be extended beyond Christmas and new year. (reminder: this is different from NSW government stay-at-home order for northern beaches, which is set to expire Wednesday).
sounds like ACT CHO has some kind of duel jurisdictional role here? She refers to ACT borders by “territory” and “national” measures for Canberra airport.
so basically every jurisdiction has put enforceable health regulations on the whole of greater Sydney or the whole of NSW except the actual NSW government, which has confined enforceable restrictions to the Northern Beaches and issued “advice” for the rest of Sydney.
oh and the Commonwealth. Every state and territory leader has issued enforceable restrictions on Greater Sydney or the whole of NSW except the NSW and federal governments. The NSW and federal governments are both headed by Liberal Party politicians who are wealthy Sydneysiders.
this last point can not be overstated. There has been one rule for wealthy politicians and their mates, while they kick down on casual workers trapped in precarious conditions caused by bosses, this WHOLE TIME. Stokes, Cormann, Brandis, Hockey, Abbott. Filmmakers. Aspen skiers.
and no matter what chunder their expensive image controllers pump out, Morrison and Berejiklian are wealthy Sydneysiders and Liberal Party politicians. As well as being appalling leaders, obviously. Everything else is campaign comms. They are Sydney snobs. One rule for the rest.
also - and I know public health is the first consideration - but I genuinely hope this plays well for the other leaders, politically. They deserve it. Their decisions and actions are clear and consistent and seem largely proportionate and public health-oriented to me.
*from my perspective, which is greater Sydney but not personally or geographically in proximity to the Northern Beaches, I should say.
because the non- and semi-actions of Morrison and Berejiklian would have forced lots of people around the country to self-restrict gatherings, outings etc. Instead, their leaders said no thanks let Sydney contain it rather than heaps higher restrictions all over the place.
enforceable restrictions for greater Sydney (h/t Josh Butler). Everything else outside the stay-at-home order for the northern beaches is request or advice.
