[THREAD] it is important to remember that we can’t diagnose ourselves, not because it is bad to try to get answers on our own but because we can internalize some information about ourselves that may be different from what is actually happening.
For example, a lot of people reach out to me asking if they have ADHD because they are starting to lose concentration and memory, and it seems to fit with that diagnosis. The problem is any mental health condition when it is in an acute stage will trigger those symptoms.
ADHD has to be present from birth, it is not something we develop as adults. But when we internalize that we have ADHD, we are looking at the wrong place for those answers and may start self medicating in a way that can actually be harmful to us.
While we may have a general idea of the fact that we may be suffering from depression or anxiety, there are many categories to these and these categories are important because they will dictate the appropriate treatment plan for each one of us.
Even for myself, when I am going through something psychological, I do not feel comfortable diagnosing myself and always rely on other professionals because I can’t take that step back and look at my own condition objectively or even that of my loved ones.
Whenever we lose our objectivity, we can no longer provide diagnosing the right way. Please don’t rely on google or other people who may not be professionals for your diagnosis because it can be a slippery slope.
