I love books. & I love writing.
I’m learning all the time from the great variety of Indigenous fiction, poetry & non-fiction. We mustn’t forget our oral story telling though - how our song lines are the oldest stories in the world.
My reading pile I hope to finish during Xmas

I’ve written two books, both to support the #UluruStatement campaign for Voice, Treaty & Truth.
As a fella that scraped by Yr12, and a wharfie by occupation, I never expected I’d write a book.
Though when the heart wants to speak, I found putting pen to paper becomes easy.

Finding the Heart of the Nation was published in October ‘19.
It is 251 pages of non-fiction, based on interviews with 20 FN’s ppl from around the country, told of by me as narrator. I tell my story; how the Uluru Statement came to be; & what we must do to achieve its proposals.

Finding Our Heart was published in June.
It‘s for 5-10 yo’s, though it’s great for ppl of all ages.
The inspiration for the book was observing how kids teach parents. & also, as a parent of 5 kids, how I love reading progressive books to them. Blak Douglas illustrated

I’m currently working on two more books I’ll mention.
One is about the Gurindji Wave Hill Walk-off for children, co-authored with Rosie Smiler, a granddaughter of Vincent Lingiari.
My daughter, Shayla Mayor is illustrating. (Photo: Rosie & me, Gurindji country)

The other is about fatherhood - through letters to sons.
In the book, with Indigenous contributors both well-known and debuting, we guide our sons based on our experiences. It’ll seek to help boys & men trying to shake off colonial behaviours & serve to break awful stereotypes.

I’ll end this thread by asking tweeters who‘re on Insta to follow @BlackfullaBookClub.
Founders @teelareid and @MerindaDutton wonderfully amplify the voices of Indigenous writers, linking readers to great works of story-telling. Finally, some pics of recent books I’ve enjoyed:
