Todd Grantham returning as Florida’s defensive coordinator in 2021 would be a colossal error. It’d enrage the fan base top to bottom like nothing since Muschamp’s fourth year.
Problem in my eyes is that upgrading this defense isn’t as simple as getting any other warm body as DC.

Grantham’s defenses aren’t nearly as bad on average as his worst units or their worst outings suggest. But Florida’s problem is that it needs better to ascend to the plateau where fans will be satisfied. It’s the base camp to mountaintop problem, even if this year looks worse.
I think Florida can win titles with an above-average Grantham defense — but it’d need an offense like this year’s to buoy it. Can’t count on that.
Mullen probably thinks similarly, but he may have more ego and confidence re: offense and will have more sentiment re: Grantham.

But Mullen’s gonna have to self-scout and self-evaluate and make that hard choice unless he truly believes this offense is the floor and not close to the ceiling.
And if he truly believes that? He’s probably not actually the guy.

So we get back to how to upgrade — and I’m not sure. You can zag where Grantham zigged; you can hire names and faces that are known; you can even reach to the obscure.
Mullen has to get it right and has to fire a friend to get to that point in the flowchart. I don’t envy it.

But all the millions Dan Mullen makes are for being a boss who has to make tough calls like this. And if he can’t get counsel from all the smart people he knows to find the clear path forward?
Then we’ve got bigger issues than botched clock management as a 17-point dog.
