The Star Wars discourse continues to be weird. But going to throw out a few thoughts, fwiw. I’m of the thought that the franchise needs to move on from the Skywalker saga now that the sequel trilogy is over. Which is what I’ve loved about The Mandalorian.
Aside from Boba, it’s mostly been new characters, new places, and a new story. Even the Dave Filoni characters have been used sparingly (and with astute purpose). That said, given the specificity of S1 and S2 as it relates to Grogu, and the context of the time period we are in,
it makes *the most* sense for [redacted] (are we still in spoilers?) to show up in the finale. For it to be anyone else would have been disingenuous imo. So I don’t buy into the fan service theory. It’s makes sense for continuity and character, it makes sense for Star Wars.
However, as incisive as that is, the finale’s emotion is rooted in great relationship building and storytelling. It’s the culmination of two seasons as Din becomes more and more unmasked, so to speak, both in a literal sense but also emotionally as a surrogate father.
The cameo offers a farewell that works for both characters as the larger story has been leading to this, & it’s great to see his entrance, but it’s the moment that follows that truly slays. It’s seeing Din as his most vulnerable that I love. A place that is familiar in Star Wars.
Which is to say, I’ve loved The Mandalorian so far. And I’m excited to see what they cook up next.
