I promised you guys at least a little TROS SALT today so I'll admit the thing that lives the most rent-free in my head is the moment when Not Tarkin says, "It's not an army, it's just PEOPLE!" like we're supposed to be inspired. I hate that was the note the saga ends on.
I get that they were going for a "The bad guys want to divide us, but if we stand together, we can defeat any evil!" message, but like... But we've been doing that since Episode 1???

Jumping in an X-Wing and blowing something up DOESN'T WORK. It doesn't lead to lasting peace. Yeah, it's a cool and flashy way to end a movie, but that's not how you end a Saga.

The Sequel Trilogy begins with Finn being bathed in Stormtrooper blood. Finn understands more than anyone that there is a real, human cost to the perpetual cycle of war. War is machine, and Stormtrooper blood is its fuel.

When Finn decides that he won't kill for the First Order, Phasma literally calls Finn a "bug in the system." Again, War is a machine, and Finn has the power to break it.
If every Stormtrooper laid down their arms, the First Order would have no army. The Resistance would have no one to fight. The diplomatic solution to the war was right there in a lovely Finn shaped package, and JJ Abrams was like.................. nah, explosions.
And I have to wonder, if JJ was so dead set on doing Return of the Jedi all over again, why couldn't he copy THE ACTUAL MESSAGE OF THE FILM???

TROS HAD ONE JOB. IT NEEDED TO "STOP THE FIGHTING AND ALLOW DIPLOMACY TO RESUME." THAT'S IT. THAT'S HOW YOU TIE THE WHOLE NINE FILM SAGA TOGETHER AND JUSTIFY THE EXISTENCE OF THE SEQUEL TRILOGY.
