Correlation isn't causation. Increased detection of #COVID19 Variant Under Investigation (VUI-202012/01) is occurring at same time as a general surge in coronavirus infections in UK. IMO it's premature to claim this mutation spreads more rapidly.

Spike protein mutation in UK's VUI-202012/01 has occurred independently in several places, including S. Africa's 501.V2 variant. COG-UK only runs genomics on ~10% of #COVID19 cases, so 1000+ w/variant strain doesn't tell us yet if it's more infectious.

VUI-202012-01 may spread faster/infect easier after all. Good thread on possible functional changes of new variant, particularly the N501Y spike protein mutation. A PCR test commonly used in UK ~may~ be able to provide insight to spread w/out genomic testing.
