Quite honestly—and I don’t say this lightly—if you’re white and you haven’t really given Lovecraft Country a shot you need to look deep within yourself. It’s an uncomfortable ride but very educating.
For instance, they have an entire episode dedicated to the death of Emmett Till. I must admit that this event was not apart of my American History education until 2018 thanks to the National Museum of African American History.
And I grew up in a super diverse suburb of New York City to a first generation Hungarian Jew. I imagine I’m not alone. Germany has taken their commitment to understanding the Holocaust more seriously than Americans have devoted their attention to the effects of slavery.
This is so easy to fix. And Lovecraft Country is a great first step of many. We are so lucky to live in a time of such incredible art. I really believe in the power of art to change and shape minds beyond the power of argument or reason—to the space of feeling and true compassion
