Sprinters can run really well, but do you expect them to win marathon races? Simply, if you have now reached a generation who came into cricket enamoured by the T20 game, why do you expect to have your best players have better skills in the longer test format? Basic economics..
If the rewards of T20 in all ways, money and fame, are what is motivating kids into the game of cricket, it's not fair to expect them to be great test cricketers. They did not, like Dravid, watch Gavaskar batting for days & want to do the same. They watched Yuvraj hitting sixes..
The fact is, test cricket is not the reason why the cricketers we are getting today are entering the game. Some may have better technique and will adapt better, but most are adapting to the marathon of test cricket, from being natural T20 'sprint' players....
The adjustment is slightly easier for bowlers, but even they have to learn bowling more patiently, bowling longer spells and more consistent lengths. And they cannot depend on the batsman attacking and making mistakes, they have to create uncertainty and mistakes..
So we still might do better once in a while as we still get millions playing cricket, some who might just be suited to play longer formats, but that is not what the majority of young cricketers are dreaming about. So, we are optimising to win T20 games, whether we like it or not.
That decision was ours, the viewers, by watching much more T20 cricket, which is why sponsors follow, we have made the game much bigger. It's not good or bad, it is what it is, & the sooner we understand & accept our rewarding for T20 & wanting test results, we'll be fine.
