10 yrs ago today my partner of 5 yrs passed away. I cared for her for 5 yrs thru non-stop, complicated conditions related to cancer. The end was drawn out & ugly. I'm still thinking abt what it means to be a #caregiver & how my experience shapes my current book project. 1/3
One way it is shaping my project: I choose to engage with my participants through a trauma-informed approach. As someone who had severe PTSD, I can sit in silence w/ participants, let them loop in time in their story as much as they need to, and crying/emotions are welcome. 2/3
Also approach participants as complex human beings. No, caregivers are not "angels." They are coping w/ sometimes near imposs demands. I wasn't perfect & my coping sometimes v destructive. Caregivers=human. The exp is complex. I create space for ppl to be wholly themselves. 3/3
