Your neighbor's house caught fire.
There's not enough evidence to say the fire started there but let's say it did.
You watch your neighbor desperately doing everything they can to fight the fire, and you laugh at them. You say this doesn't happen in democracies. (1/7)
You watch them pour money and time and resources into fighting the fire, and you call their measures "draconian" and an "overreaction". You watch their people suffer and pity them with a tinge of schadenfreude. If only they were born in the free world like us. (2/7)
You think this fire is going to be the end of your neighbor. While you're gloating, a spark has spread to your house. But you don't think it's a big deal. It's just a little spark. You'd rather call out your neighbor's failures. It wouldn't happen to you, after all. (3/7)
You turn around realize your house is actually badly on fire. But you don't know what to do, even though your neighbor already showed you what to do. But it doesn't align with your democratic principles. And it would mean your neighbor was right. That would be embarrassing. (4/7)
Your neighbor's fire is now under control, and yours is burning. You accuse your neighbor of lying. You yell at them for letting the fire to spread. You even demand reparations. None of this does anything to help the fire that's spreading in your house right now. (5/7)
You refuse to take the same measures your neighbor did. You politicize fire fighting methods and face coverings and refuse to give people what they need to stay out of the way of the fire. You don't want to inconvenience yourself or spend the money. (6/7)
Now, your neighbor has rebuilt their house. It's nice and their family is happy. They're throwing a party. Your house is engulfed in flames.
"This is all your fault! How dare you have fun! It's your fault we can't have Christmas this year!" you scream at your neighbor. (7/7)
