first, as always, im not doing this to justify smp!dream. he's someone that does rlly crappy things that arent ok! and i dont mean to say that they are, in any way, ok. but he does have Motives. he does have Reasoning. they dont justify what he's done, but literally
every character on this smp has done similar "unredeemable" things. dream was emotionally manipulative, but so was villbur; dream wants to destroy the government, so does techno, etc etc. smp!dream is a complex character that does crappy things, but if youre gonna hold people who
like him accountable for the actions a fictional character did in fiction, then you might as well do it for anybody who likes anyone on the dsmp bc literally all of them have committed war crimes. dream actually commits fewer war crimes than most people
bc he organizes his actions around the law to stay legally clean. but i digress.
anyways, with that rant out of the way, onto actually talking about fiction:

smp!dream said he wants the server to be "one big happy family" on punz's stream a few days ago. a lot of people speculated on this, and his backstory (not yet revealed) and what he means by this. some people think that he's lying, or manipulating, etc, but i think
tho this is the first time he's articulated it In This Way in particular, it's far from the first time he's expressed this as his goal.
if you think about pretty much anything smp!dream's ever done, it's been to keep the server,, one cohesive unit. the disc war started bc tommy was starting crap with sapnap (?) and dream came to mediate their conflict.
tommy attacked him bc he wasnt really armed, dream came in to take the discs in order to get tommy to stop, and then the whole disc war started.
from the beginning, the discs represented control to dream, specifically control over tommy. but what did he do with that control?

he didnt use the discs to make tommy do anything, like gather resources, etc. he didn't hold it against tommy to threaten him. he just used them,, to stop tommy from causing chaos. from starting conflict.
moving on, lmanburg declares revolution (not gonna go too into this, but saying that dreamsmp started the war is kinda shortsighted. lmanburg was made by fugitives that wanted to sell drugs, and then made a country to escape the consequences.
further, declaring independence is almost,, always viewed as a declaration of war. the declaration of war might've come from DreamSMP, but they started that revolution fully knowing that a war would be the consequence)

moving on, this continues. he supported pogtopia at first bc he wanted lmanburg the same way it was, not like manburg, which was invading dreamsmp land and therefore once again starting a war. he ended up on manburg's side for,, some reason, but
whatever it is, it's unrevealed and evidently plot-significant, so i cant really use it to prove one way or another at this point in time.
moving on, he likes new lmanburg, bc they dont start wars. tubbo doesnt start conflict. tommy, on the other hand, does.

and you can argue that new lmanburg's easier to control, you can argue that tubbos being manipulated, either way you have to admit that tommy starts conflict! leave him alone for a few days and he'll inevitably be in hot water. it's nothing i blame on him, per se, bc
as a character he's been through a lot of war and trauma that would affect the way he copes with reality, but the fact of the matter is that tommy starts conflict. Big conflicts. conflicts that dream hates.
(random side note: ive seen posts abt people just disregarding dream's power, and as much as i think theyre funny,, dream's power isnt unsubstantiated. its messy, and weird, and not all-powerful (in the lore, in reality he's opped) but he's still,, powerful.
even tho almost nobody in the lore likes him, everyone still,, respects his authority, in a sense. no one questions that to some degree, he has power over the server. i firmly believe, until proved otherwise, that in some way the world Belongs To Him.
how he's used his power, and where it comes from, isnt really well-established, but his power is there. it's not something that is as easy as simply being ignored.)
finally ,, why is dream acting the way he is?

i think that smp!dream has had a corruption arc, just as villbur. it's just been in the background, bc we never see his pov.

in the beginning, he Made this server! he made the things in it! the community house, nether hub, farms, prime path, tree farm ,, , he put so much effort into making all of these things for Everyone.
bc this place is his Home. these people are his Family. why wouldnt he make good things for them? why wouldnt he do things for them?
but then fights happened. and he'd mediate, to the best of his ability, but well. that didnt always work.

the discs were reliable though. the discs could make tommy, otherwise uncontrollable, stop. could limit the amount of conflict.
but it doesnt stay that way.

lmanburg forms, and then the server gets into a True War, one that takes people's lives. where canon deaths are now a thing. and smp!dream is trying desperately to hold onto his vision of a server that is home for Everyone,, but it's falling apart before his eyes.
and then the revolution is over, and there's peace, and for a moment it feels like it's going to last. and then the election happens, and everything falls apart, again. now there's not just two nations, but three. and then four, with the badlands.
everything's ,, fracturing. falling apart. and smp!dream cant do anything to stop it. and through it all, everyone still sees him as the villain.
saying that dream's vision of "one big happy family" dissolved from his actions alone an opinion, , that i find at least somewhat shortsighted. lmanburg chose to rebel for no real reason, other to cause conflict. the ideals that they adopted came later.
but in the beginning, they were just a couple fugitives raising their middle fingers at the law to Start Crap. it's nothing against wilbur and tommy and lmanburg,, it's just,, how it was.
but from smp!dream's pov, it's a massive betrayal. it's spitting in the face of Everything He's Done For Everyone for the sake of petty conflict false authority.
and this continues. the badlands leave for their own glory, a vision of a world under their control as pogtopia/manburg/whatever fights within themselves. george tries to get power in lmanburg, despite dream repeatedly saying they must stay neutral.
sapnap,, simply starts needless conflict, against dream's advice, killing pets and setting things on fire and leaving him to deal with the consequences. it's selfish. it's annoying. and above all, it's out of smp!dream's control.
smp!dream's vision of "one big happy family" didnt dissolve with him. it started when everyone around him pursued things for their own benefit, instead of the benefit of the group. am i saying what they did was wrong? no, not necessarily.
but for smp!dream, who before this has acted repeatedly for the good of the Community, for Everyone,, it's completely unfathomable. and it's a betrayal.
so he becomes more and more twisted. he's done all of this, and people still see him as a villain. he's stretched himself thin trying to sort out Every Stupid Conflict on the server, and everyone both demands him to do it and condemn him for it.
and at some point, he,,, breaks. i pinpoint it as the moment where villbur tells him: i know you dont care about anyone. let me be your vassal.
because smp!dream did care. he cared, and where did it get him?

what did he receive from it, besides being branded as a tyrant, besides being betrayed by everyone he knew, besides being seen as awful and a dictator for simply existing? what did he get out of it, besides every bloody person hating his guts?
shortly after this, something happens with schlatt, that hasnt been revealed to us yet. but ever since then, smp!dream hasnt been the same. he's more malevolent, more manipulative, more willing to go to extremes
for whatever goals he has. and his goals havent changed. he still wants his server in one piece. he wants it to stop tearing itself apart, because he sees the Whole Place as "DreamSMP" , which is HIS responsibility.
his methods, though, have become more and more morally wrong. he's tried giving people the chance to work together, to get along, and theyve failed. theyve failed repeatedly, they keep deciding to Start More Conflict and get themselves KILLED and smp!dream's tired of it.
if they wont become one big happy family? then he'll force them to be one.
to be clear, again, i dont condone his actions. but he's not evil for the sake of being evil. he's not doing all of this just because he wants the world burned down. on the contrary, he's tired of the fighting. he's tired of the conflict.
he's,, messy. and awful, and has done so many wrong things,, but he wasnt always that way. he's always been the kind of person that does things only because he feels like he Needs to do them, whether he's right about that or not.
