The Jewish people are an ethnoreligious indigenous to the modern state of Israel. Over 2000 years ago, they were forcibly exiled across the globe.
1. Ashkenazi Jews
The word Ashkenaz comes from Hebrew and it translates to Germany, where Ashkenazim first settled. Later on, a lot of them immigrated to all parts of Eastern Europe.
2. Sephardi Jews
The word Sepharad means Spain in Hebrew. After the Expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, Sephardi Jews went to North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkan region in south east Europe.
3. Mizrahi Jews
The word Mizrachi means Eastern in Hebrew and was given to describe Jews whose families lived in Arabic-speaking Muslim-majority countries.
4. Mountain Jews
Mountain Jews are the descendants of Persian Jews from Iran and Babylonian Jews from Baghdad who settled in the east and northern Caucasus countries e.g. Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Ingushetia.
5. Georgian Jews
Georgian Jews, also called Gruzim, is one of the oldest Jewish diaspora group. Georgian Jews have an approximately 2,600 year history in Colchis. They are considered ethnically and culturally distinct from neighboring Mountain Jews.
6. Ethiopian Jews
Ethiopian Jews, also called Beta Israel, are Jews who are descended from the Tribe of Dan and got exiled to Ethiopia before the destruction of the second Temple. Before they made Aliyah, they didn‘t celebrate Purim and Chanukah.
7. Italian Jews
Italian Jews, also called Italkim, are a Jewish community who has been living in Italy since the Roman times. They have their own nusach which makes them different from Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews who lived in Italy.
8. Bukharian Jews
Bukharian Jews are a Jewish community that lived in Uzbekistan (the region of Bukhara, where their name comes from) but they also lived in Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. They spoke Bukhori, a Tajik dialect of the Persian language.
9. Cochin Jews
Cochin Jews are the oldest group of Jews in India, with roots that are claimed back to the time of King Solomon. They settled in the Kingdom of Cochin in South India. The majority of Cochin Jews made Aliyah after Israel was established as a nation.
10. Kaifeng Jews
Kaifeng Jews are a small Jewish community living in Kaifeng, China. They are most likely descended from Persian Jews. There are about 1000 of them living in China and 20 living in Israel. They base their Jewishness by patrilineal descent.
11. Krymchak Jews
Krymchaks are a small Jewish community living in Crimea, Ukraine. They are the only Turkic Jewish community left in the world. Their population is about 1,200-1,500, with approx. 700 living in Israel and the remaining 500 living in Ukraine and Russia.
12. Bene Israel
Bene Israel are the Jewish community of Mumbai, India. It has been suggested that they are the descendants of one of the disputed Lost Tribes who settled there centuries ago. Today, most Bene Israel live in Israel, with only about 5,000 left in India.
13. Romaniote Jews
Romaniote Jews are the Jewish community of Greece. They speak Judeao-Greek, a Greek dialect that contains Hebrew along with some Aramaic and Turkish words. The majority of Romaniote Jews live in Israel today, with about 45,000 living there.
