We’re facing a very dire moment in the history of LA.
Nearly 20% of tests in the city are positive. Our hospitals are bursting. And the surge is accelerating.
This month is going to be immensely painful. We can mitigate the damage — but only if we act collectively. (thread) https://twitter.com/skarlamangla/status/1340343433303453696

There are now 5,424 people hospitalized with COVID in LA County. That number has doubled in the last two weeks. Today saw the largest increase yet.
Meanwhile, the growth in new cases has not leveled off — we continue to set new record highs every day. https://twitter.com/ReporterClaudia/status/1340013542813048832?s=20

It’s important that we reckon with the nightmare that LA medical workers are facing. Hospitals are under siege. Doctors and nurses are not getting rest.
The system is working to scale up, but staffing simply is not available to meet a continued surge. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-17/hospitals-likely-to-be-overwhelmmed-by-new-years

Who are the Angelenos bearing the brunt of our recent outbreak?
People of color. People crowded into homes. Workers, deprived of the support that would allow them to stay home, who get sick on the job and spread the disease to their entire families. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-18/la-covid-19-spread-hits-elderly-people-of-color-extra-hard

Our reality in LA right now is grim. The horror that hospitals are currently facing is going to get worse.
We’ve seen our highest case totals in the last few days. Many of those will end up in hospitals, crushing available capacity.
How much worse it gets depends on all of us.

We have not done enough — as a country, as a state, and as a city — to create safe conditions for people right now. Workers can’t afford to stay home without government support. We must do more.
But in the immediate term, the burden is on us as neighbors to keep each other safe.

If you’re considering an unnecessary errand, please stay home. If you’re planning a small gathering, please stay home. If you’re thinking about visiting family for Christmas, please consider postponing.
LA’s entire medical system is on the brink. We cannot handle another surge.

I’m new in this role, and actively learning what options are being considered regarding policy changes and COVID safety at the City and County. But it’s been heartening to find out how many people are working extremely hard to protect Angelenos.
This year has placed a huge strain on our mental health. The prospect of more weeks without in-person companionship is hard to face.
But if we can reduce our case numbers in the next few weeks, we can avoid unprecedented suffering. We can survive this.

As we navigate this moment, our office is building a Volunteer Corps to safely reach out and help connect people with their needs.
