Read some comments on a #SaveOurStages post & it occurred to me that people don’t realize that Broadway/theater folk in general haven’t worked since March. Many weren’t eligible for a stimulus check or UI. That many are “this close” to not affording rent/bills or may be evicted.
These commenters have streamed all their fave tv shows, maybe even Hamilton and The Prom & forgotten that PEOPLE make these projects happen. The glitzy idea of Broadway is what they think is reality. I’m sure they’ll be the 1st to complain when they’ve run out of shows to binge.
The truth of the matter is live entertainment was among one of the first industries to shut down and will absolutely be the last to reopen. An industry that contributes $878 Billion to the US economy. Which is more than labor/const., transportation, energy, edu. or agriculture.
In NYC alone, Broadway (and Broadway reliant industries) provides over 96K jobs, and accounts for more income to the city than ALL of our sports teams combined. Income that the city has been without since March. Saving our stages means saving our cities, our states, our country.
So miss me with your ignorant rants and selfish lack of empathy. We’re ALL trying to make it.
