This is a social problem where a wide swath of Americans believe our institutions have failed them. It is a loss of faith in the American covenant that the future of this country will be better than its past. The loss of status & hope is driving a self & social destruction.
This is not a bi-lateral conflict. This is not about Democrats versus Republicans. This elementary understanding of the conflict will exacerbate social tension and ultimately lead to violence, even less social cohesion and further undermine confidence in our political system.
In the early 1800’s, “Luddites” in England chose destruction as a means to stop technological advances & economic displacement - Choosing violence and destruction as a means of resistance to change and economic displacement. This destruction is a sign of hopelessness.
Seditious acts and violence must be prosecuted. They must be stamped out to prevent the spread of this behavior as acceptable. We must ostracize this as socially unacceptable, isolate & kill it like a virus, BUT...
We must also recognize that the more partisan it becomes the greater the likelihood it grows and takes root and of political toxicity spilling over into social unrest.
