I’ve had many students express frustration + sadness at the lack of courses available on the climate emergency, from wide range of perspectives. There’s something like gaslighting going on when universities don’t offer curriculum on the biggest threats to their students’ futures.
I know that science denial is a charged term. But I want to raise the question: is an institution of higher learning a truly scientific institution if its predominant activities don’t reflect scientific consensus on big problems? Obv this isn’t just about climate.
As the famous eco-socialist—er, father of classical economics—Adam Smith put it, we should imagine the world as seen through eyes of others. Higher ed leadrs: pls imagine how future looks the through eyes of 18-yr-olds, who read the news + know the scientific consensus. Scary af.
Recently in a seminar, a bunch of students revolted when I said they'd be stuck dealing w this mess. They said they were so sick of being told they'd have to solve this problem, told by ppl from older generations, who could have done something about it before it got so bad.
