Medicine has a long history of inequality and unfairness. Nobody talks about this, but when VIP patients come to the hospital, they’re treated differently than normal patients who aren’t as “important.” Stanford even used to put a red blanket on their bed to signal their status.
Attending physicians also routinely treat resident physicians like garbage. They play favorites based on racial preference or whatever whims they decide suits them at the moment. There is no dissent or appeal process. Once you get on the bad side of an attending, you’re screwed.
It doesn’t matter how smart you are. It doesn’t matter how much you care about your patients. Literally nothing about your actual performance matters. It’s all subjective within the strict militant hierarchy in medicine. And they all stick together like sharks to tear you apart.
