There's a fundamental storytelling difference between MCU and Star Wars that makes SW more of a challenge. The MCU narrative has forward momentum. The overall story is always growing, with the occasional prequel (Captain Marvel, Black Widow) filling in timeline gaps. https://twitter.com/Variety/status/1340332310126874625
The bulk of SW now (and for the future w/ Disney+ shows) is all timeline fillers/filling in gaps of a larger story that's been told. These can be fun (Rogue 1, Mando) but there's a lack of forward momentum to the overall SW narrative that is already frustrating some...
Mando S2 finale made the show even MORE of a timeline filler than it had been by sending Grogu off with Luke. The MCU puts one foot in front of another with its overall story moving forward, SW is just making its same footprint bigger. Not sure SW can sustain itself this way...
Can't help but wonder after Mando S2 how the overall SW narrative plans to move forward. Are we eventually getting Grogu, Rey, Ahsoka post Rise of Skywalker? Or is the plan to forever just grow the footprint bigger? Not a bad thing, just fundamentally different than the MCU
Put it this way: WandaVision alone will propel the MCU forward in a way Boba Fett/Andor/Obi Wan/Acolyte/Ahsoka etc. combined won't for larger SW narrative. I'm glad SW is doing something different, but the expansion approach is far riskier for sustaining interest compared to MCU
In a way, the SW expansion method puts a much greater pressure on series to be excellent (this is a good thing!). It's ok for certain MCU films to be average/bad (Ant Man). Every fan will still watch. Even a bad MCU movie is appointment viewing b/c it builds the larger story.
Will the same be true for SW? If Acolyte is meh.. there might not be as much incentive to watch (as its set before Phantom Menace). If WandaVision is bad, so what? Everyone is still going to watch as it leads directly to Dr Strange 2 and Spider Man 3 (all those cameos!)
This seems to be why SW is relying so aggressively on linking popular characters through series (Luke in Mando, Vader in Obi Wan, Thrawn in Ahsoka, Darth Plagueis in Acolyte?). It's one way to make sure the expansion method is appointment viewing.. it might work! We'll see.....
