Some perspective-changing insights I derived from the book 12 Rules for Life by @jordanbpeterson

1/16
-> Don't burry yourself in the needs of others.

Don't say yes when you want to say no.

Tell the truth. Align with it.

Synchronize with your wants and needs. Listen to them carefully.

That's what protects us from sailing adrift.

2/16
-> Don't aim to be constantly happy. You'll be disappointed.

There will always be suffering in life. Unexpected events will inevitably happen during our journey.

So instead of aiming to be constantly happy, aim to be resilient to suffering.

3/16
-> Meaning is at the border between chaos and order.

One foot on something safe, another on something we don't know and want to explore.

That's how existence becomes meaningful.

"Don’t settle, and don’t struggle. Life is what flows in between." - @naval

4/16
-> Align with yourself.

When you're feeling anxious, ask:

"Am I acting according to what I believe in?"

- If the answer is yes, then you're already doing what's best for you.
- If the answer is no, change your behavior so that the answer becomes yes.

5/16
-> Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.

I have a mantra that helps me embody this principle:

I'm not ahead. I'm not behind. I'm just here.

6/16
-> Success is relative

In evolutionary theory, "survival of the fittest" means survival of the most successful in the current environment.

"The "fit" in "fitness" is therefore the matching of organismal attribute to environmental demand."

"Success" is far from absolute.

7/16
-> There are many good games in the world.

Don't get stuck playing a game you don't want to be playing.

Choose a game that you want to play, and that you can win using your strengths and despite your weaknesses.

I've found my game - it's building freedom with @go_prune

8/16
-> Delay gratification.

Delaying gratification is depriving the present-self of something, so that the future-self can get something else better.

We can only negotiate with the future because we have the ability to imagine it.

9/16
-> Set your boundaries or risk getting them set for you.

If something bothers you, say it.

Learn to be comfortable expressing where your limits are.

Not only to show them to others, but also to yourself.

10/16
-> Connecting with others implies letting down your guard.

Ever wondered why Superman is vulnerable to kryptonite?

Because a character with no vulnerabilities is unrelatable and boring.

Find the sweet spot between vulnerability and defensiveness.

11/16
-> Globalization as a proxy to low self-esteem.

When people lived in small villages, it was easier to be the best at a particular skill.

With globalization, instead of a handful of people, we are now competing against the world.

That decreases our sense of success.

12/16
-> If you feel empty, check whether you're going where you want to go.

If life isn't fulfilling, you might be walking towards a destination that you don't really want to reach.

Do you wake up energized to do what you need to do? That should give you an idea.

13/16
-> Group-centered beliefs - choose your poison.

"Loss of group-centered belief renders life chaotic, miserable, intolerable;

Presence of group-centered belief makes conflict with other groups inevitable."

14/16
-> Face your problems headfirst.

To solve a problem in ourselves, first, we need to admit it exists. And then define it clearly.

But that implies accepting that we are flawed, and so we avoid it.

Small problems, however, when ignored tend to become big problems.

15/16
-> The people who support us play a huge role on your mental health.

When we diverge towards turtuous paths, the people who support us will be there to help us get back on track.

Never underestimate their importance.

Trying to be 100% independent is a huge mistake.
