Close reading is "a thing."

One master of this is @KyleneBeers.

But what about "close viewing"? I love the weekly @nytimes "What's Going On In This Picture?" activity where students are given an image on Monday w/out caption and some guidance on viewing it from @VTSNational
I adapted a series of questions from the Visualizing and Verbalizing program for use when interrogating an image from the @nytimes "What's Going On In This Picture?"

And I find it's translated well into looking deeply at images that are hard to discern. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1aX6FNV4shIn2w6HEAqy7hA6fajLRx9jyBhpQo2VgvXk/edit?usp=sharing
I've spent a lot of time lately roaming my community with camera in hand shooting street photography or documenting debris we've found as part of a National Geographic grant in my garage with my @TabletopPhotog2 macro studio.

Here's a fun "close viewing" game we play.
Take an image that's visually interesting. Zoom WAAAAAY into it so that it becomes pixelated. Zoom out in small increments and slide around, pausing to ask students to make inferences about what they're viewing based on colors or visual patterns. Play along with this example.
A BIG realization I had this week: making visual inferences with a photo translates into close viewing and interpreting of satellite data.

Students used this Esri GeoInquiries from @GISEd to explore climate patterns related to latitude and elevation.

In this map, students saw elevation, precipitation, and temperature patterns. They interpreted temperature regimes related to latitude.

Geographic inquiry launched by a photo? Yes.
