the split attraction model is god awful for many many reasons but one of the main reasons is that it divides sexual and romantic orientation into pieces that work independently of one another, when in reality the two go hand in hand.
it’s what happens when 13 year olds on tumblr who havent experienced any kind of sexual awakening yet are given the words homoSEXUAL and heteroSEXUAL and assume that they describe sex only. it’s really just about your attraction to other people in general.
with that being said, the only people who are /truly/ asexual in all senses of the word are aroaces. not to say that non-aro people who identify as ace secretly have sexual desires or are “faking it” or anything, but that experiencing attraction to other people in any way (1/2)
kinda eclipses the need for sex (or lack thereof)
the split attraction model heavily impacted queer people our age by othering them if they arent interested in sex or dont experience sexual attraction. but someone’s sexual desires arent the only thing discussed in the real world. if i tell someone i’m gay, (1/2)
that just means that im attracted to other male-adjacent people, but whether or not i have sex is unimportant to the conversation. this is why the argument that cis heteroromantic aces aren’t lgbt is so common: someone’s sexual tendencies do not inherently make them lgbt (2/2)
