When I saw the news about a hearing actor taking on a deaf role, I was livid. And I wasn’t the only one. We, as actors, stand with our American peers and when they were asking for names for the list, I straight away added myself to the list.

We’ve simply had enough. https://twitter.com/beingstephenc/status/1340311990867255297
Please read the statement. Share this around. Show your support and pledge that you will be more inclusive whether that’s in casting or behind the scenes. We are worthy and fed up of having this battle.

Cast DEAF actors in DEAF roles.
And it’s not enough just to say:

“Oh but that’s his job, he’s an actor!”

There’s nothing worse than seeing ourselves on the screen being played by a non-disabled actor and thinking “why wasn’t I asked to audition for this role?”
Because I don’t need to research into how to be “deaf” cos guess what?

I am deaf.

I want to represent myself on screen so that younger deaf people can see that it’s possible for them to be anything. Not just being an actor but in any other profession.
Whether that’s a doctor or a nurse or a designer or a hairdresser or a manager or whoever THEY want to be.

And I want to provide that for the young deaf community.

Because I never got that when I was growing up.
