(thread) When I publish a book, I think of its yearly cohort as a kind of literary litter of pups—& there are SO many exciting books coming out alongside my own GIRLHOOD in 2021; it is a very, very big and beautiful litter. Here are some highlights (plz add to my list!):
Also publishing on March 30 are Libertie by @surlybassey & A Little Devil in America by @NifMuhammad — two of my most anticipated releases, by two of my favorite writers and humans. I'm honored that my book shares a birthday with theirs. Preorder them both and thank me later!
My own true beloved, @officialdonika is publishing her second collection with @GraywolfPress, The Renunciations, and when I tell you that this book will RUIN you in the best and most changing ways, you must know that I have never been more right. https://www.graywolfpress.org/books/renunciations
The illustrator of Girlhood, @ForsythHarmon is publishing her first novel, Justine, with @Tin_House in February, and it is a finely cut diamond of a book, replete with her exquisite drawings. Go buy that shit immediately! https://tinhouse.com/book/justine/
Speaking of @Tin_House, I assume you've already heard about @elissawashuta's new essay collection, White Magic, which is hilarious, brilliant, merciless, and magical, just like @elissawashuta. Don't sleep on it: https://tinhouse.com/book/white-magic/
2021 is so rich with brilliant memoirs that I can't even keep up with them all. A few that I have been lucky enough to read in advance and adored are: @suleikajaouad's Between Two Kingdoms, @randajarrar's Love is an Ex-Country, & @lillydancyger's Negative Space — preorder them!
Some 2021 books I haven't read but am hungry for include: @melissabroder's Milk Fed, @NadiaOwusu1's Aftershocks, @torreypeters's Detransition, Baby, @sarahschulman3's Let the Record Show, @blgtylr's Filthy Animals, & @laurenoyler's Fake Accounts
I'm also so excited for you all to discover @mizkatelebo's gorgeous essay collection, The Book of Difficult Fruit; @annanorthtweets's incredible feminist western, Outlawed; @arisaw's brilliant lyric, Who's Your Daddy; @Ginafrangello's searing memoir, Blow Your House Down
Let me not forget the short story anthology edited by geniuses @rokwon & @GarthGreenwell, KINK, which happens to have the first fiction I've written in years, along w a bunch of other, more masterful stories: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Kink/R-O-Kwon/9781982110215
I assume you've all already ordered @Kristen_Arnett's With Teeth, @jamiefigueroaa's debut Brother Sister Mother Explorer, @krysmalcolmbelc's The Natural Mother of the Child, @_elephantrock's The Part that Burns, & @iSmashFizzle's Somebody's Daughter, & if not what are you doing?!
I was ravished by Megan Nolan's Acts of Desperation, Joan Kane's Dark Traffic, & delighted by @slimnagem & @marisacrawford's anthology We Are the Babysitters Club, & @FeministPress's We Too: Essays on Sex Work and Survival—good investments, all of them!
I could keep going for so long, but I'm trying to write another book, so plz add to this thread for me and let's all go buy every single book mentioned from our local independent bookstores. If you order Girlhood from @Prairie_Lights, I'll sign it for you: https://www.prairielightsbooks.com/book/9781635572520
2021 might hold untold nightmares for us, goddess knows we've learned to expect it, but we can be sure of some top-notch reading. Remember that every time you buy a book you are keeping writers writing and keeping bookstores alive. It's a service that also serves you!
