A long thread for anyone looking for health/fitness ideas/motivation going into a new year. The thread took on a mind of its own and touches on: a) some fitness apps that work for me, b) finding inspiration from other lawyers and c) My commitment to a better/happier life in 2021.
As I started taking care of myself more in 2020, I found a @Garmin with the Garmin app essential. It automatically tracks the data, can create run training programs and sends them to your device. Also so many other data tracking features (steps, HR, sleep, stress).
Garmin also syncs with various other apps including for food tracking (which I admittedly don’t use regularly as I just can’t stay in the habit) and to other running/fitness apps. The Garmin data is basically the hub of everything else for me.
I connect Garmin with @Strava which allows me to easily share workouts with others and to cheer on my friends. It also tracks best efforts overall and over segments of your workout. We even formed a #lawyerswhostrava group which has been ++ fun.
Strava/Garmin also allow for tracking of almost all other sporting activities including biking, skiing, cross country skiing, swimming and even paddle boarding (to name a small few). So they are a good fit no matter your activity of choice.
A knock on both Strava and Garmin, is that there is no easy way to track your progress history. I wish they’d add these features. I had started making an excel spreadsheet. Fortunately, Garmin also syncs with @Runkeeper. It’s a good place to go to see progress over time.
The first app I tried was @Nike Run Club (sync’s with Garmin). It’s best feature is it’s guided runs. It has real run coaches walk you through the runs of different distances with various tips. I stopped using these over time but worth a try if you’re starting out or just bored.
The last app I’ve tried is Map my Run by Under Armour. It has many of the same features as the others. One added feature is coaching tips based primarily around cadence (how fast your feet move). They are sort of fun and I occasionally still check in on those.
Now the more personal stuff. Since December 2019 I’ve lost over 25 pounds. Primarily due to increased activity and better eating habits while WFH. The apps have helped and that they’ve connected me with people with similar goals or even more active lifestyles to aspire towards.
I’ve particularly enjoyed following other lawyers who manage to stay ++++ fit and committed. Even just seeing the time of day and frequency of their workouts helps when I’m trying to build a healthier lifestyle. It’s nice to see that it is possible.
2020 has been a
year for many obvious reasons but my one main positive is that I’ve made positive changes for my health. With friends like @Audrey_Giles lending helpful tips and support I hope to make further gains in 2021.

My biggest goal for 2021 is to have a healthier relationship with work. I will set boundaries, pass work to others that I don’t find interesting/will not help me reach my goals. I’ve never been good at setting boundaries and it’s caught up to me. No more.
Doing so will make more time to engage with groups I have largely abandoned ( @Advocates_Soc and @CDLawyers and @ccla_abcc I’m looking at you). I care about broader issues in the profession and I need time to work on those projects. And to take care of myself.
For those of you still reading, thank you for your interest, support and/or mockery and I wish all of us the best in 2021.
(Now excuse me while I rush in a workout before spending all day at my desk working...)
