Whilst 352VGD C/O Schmidt was coordinating 915/916VGRs for the assault on Diekirch, this allowed Rudder respite to re-organise his remaining units for the coming action.

They opened up, supporting somewhat piecemeal attacks from the assault Rgts of 352, lasting several hours through early/mid-afternoon. Schmidt himself was wounded during the action.
When night fell, 352 resumed probing attacks aided by searchlights to distract the defenders.

Rudder, mindful of being surrounded & cut off, called 28ID HQ at 2000hrs to request withdrawal SW of the Sauer at Ettelbruck on the Alzette river. This would enable cover of the left flank of the arriving 9AD.
