Shapour Bakhtiar served as the last Prime Minister of a monarchist Iran. In the 1950s he worked with Mossadegh in secret activity to undermine the monarchy and revive the second national front. After several concessions to Khomeini and his followers during his term (...)
He was expelled from the National Front. In his 36 days as Prime Minister- he dissolved SAVAK, released all political prisoners (communists and islamists alike), relaxed martial law and attempted to hold elections. He was still shunned by Khomeini and his followers.
After the Iranian Revolution- Bakhtiar fled to Paris in exile. In his absence, he was declared a traitor by the Revolutionary Court. On 6 August 1991, Bakhtiar was murdered along with his secretary, by three assassins in his home in Paris. Both men were killed with kitchen knives
I think the most fitting lesson that Shapour Bakhtiar’s political career espouses is that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Conceding barbarians and expecting them to treat you graciously will get you assassinated in a foreign country.
