Join me today (6 PM EST) in the Women's Wargaming Network when I go over a basic #wargaming reading list. Although there are a number of references, what are the top FIVE references for beginning professional wargamers? [1/7]
Book #1 on my and on ANY professional warmer's list is Peter Perla's The Art of Wargaming. Peter covers some of the history of #wargaming and principles of design for professionals. The focus is naval, but this was the first reference of its kind. [2/7] https://www.amazon.com/dp/1471033732/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_QZF3FbPHGCZ9B?_x_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Book #2 is Graham Longly-Brown's excellent book, Successful Professional Wargames: A Practitioner's Guide. This is a fairly comprehensive list of the things you need to worry about when running your own professional wargame. [3/7] https://www.amazon.com/dp/0244803641/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_F6F3Fb1KC7XZZ
Book #3 is by yours truly, @SebastianBae, @elliebartels, and Ben Smith, Next-Generation Wargaming for the U.S. Marine Corps. Check out the glossary of #wargaming terms and appendices of tools and centers. It's a brief "who's who" for wargaming orgs. [4/7] https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR2227.html
Book #4 is Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis by Pherson and Heurer. Many professional "wargames" demand a format other than adjudicated games. This is wonderful reference has many ideas adaptable for workshops. A must have. [5/7] https://www.amazon.com/dp/150636893X/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_6cG3FbYQE7MRJ
Book #5 is On Wargaming by Matt Caffrey. This is a great history of #wargaming and Matt is already working on the second edition. Matt, of course, also started the Connections Wargaming Conference series, which is how I became a wargamer. [6/7] https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/newport-papers/43/
There are also a number of good commercial wargaming books - books on design, mechanics, and other aspects of play. There is also scholarship on the phenomenon of gaming. But if you plan to make a living from professional #wargaming, these should be in your library. [7/7]
