Criterion quietly closed for good. Add that to Bar Brunello. At least 2 more downtown bars are slated to close by the end of the month. The city never once investigated relaxing ordinances, offering tax incentives to billionaire landlords, or even made a statement regarding rent.
Yes, we need help at a national and state level. But don’t tell me one more time about how the city could do “nothing.” They literally did NOTHING.
I get it, we’re all sad the Durhan city council is too overworked to do their job. Maybe it’ll be streamlined for them once Durham is a giant fucking Walmart.
Any restaurant that is owner operated is doing LESS than breaking even. They’re taking on debt to pay payroll and keep the lights on. Everyone is doing math daily about when to close.
I spent last night talking to restaurant and bar operators and am thoroughly disgusted that durham city government has actively encouraged this ruin. Disgusting and shameful.
I get it, maybe you think bars don’t matter and should go under. But every bar in durhan has been hosting community events, incubating art projects, and fundraising for important causes while the city consistently funds outside artists, developers, & buildings

Maybe you hate restaurants and the food scene here? That’s cool. The city does too, apparently.
