“AI will become embedded in everything we do” is one of those lines probably lifted from a McKinsey* reports that assumes no one has any control or influence over the impact of technology. “Who put that AI there?! It wasn’t me, that system poorly automated itself!” etc, etc. https://twitter.com/appg_ai/status/1340225475495530498
*other management consultants selling hokum are available, obvs.
A few people lately have questioned the validity of alternative policy interventions in the emerging tech space. But the influence of those shiny Big 4 reports in shaping possibility at scale is *immense* and subject to little broader accountability. There need to be alternatives
Limiting harm after the fact is important, but the laissez faire acceptance that loads of jobs will be automated because some management consultants have flagged their intent is not good enough. There are choices, and they should be made actively.
I really believe there need to be spaces for shaping technology futures that sit outside of the market. Funding for that is so hard to come by, and wider engagement is tough, but technology should serve society, not the other way round.
