OK, I've just woken up & I got something to say. I've been looking @win_confidante's #christmasconfidence thread last night & have read so many positive comments but have also seen negative ones saying it's wrong for people to share pics of themselves. 1/8
I'll share my experience & how much it helped me by 'exposing' myself on social media. First, I have to ask those who've said it's wrong if they have ever felt consumed by how much they hate the way they look? Have you ever seen yourself as an elephant? 2/8
Seen yourself as the biggest person ever? Eaten & then regret & then convinced yourself lumps of fat are forming on your body? That's been my relationship with my body for YEARS. I started drinking dieting milkshakes when I was 15. I was a size 14, fgs! 3/8
Overtime, I gained even more weight until I couldn't really look at myself anymore. It took years for me to actually accept I needed to do something & did lose some weight. I started my twitter at one of the lowest points in my life. My self hatred was strong. 4/8
I'd lost some weight but never enough. I was obsessed with losing more & more. I hated myself after I ate. One day, inspired by others on Twitter, I took a photo of myself in my bra & knickers. I contemplated for a while whether to post it or not. I hated myself! 5/8
Why would people want to see that?! In a moment of "Fuck it, just do it!", I pressed Tweet. I couldn't have forseen what followed. The outpouring of support & love was amazing! For the 1st time ever, I felt NORMAL! I'm not an elephant after all! 6/8
I am a completely different person. I'm much more confident, I've never loved myself as much as I do now. And this change, invited other positive things in my life! Sharing that picture, was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. It's out there, it can't hurt me. 7/8
And that's why we should encourage body positivity! It really is life changing! Just scroll on by & don't say anything if it offends you coz you don't know what it took for that person to put themselves out there. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. ❤ 8/8
