Just like to make a thread explaining details about LoF.
Let’s start with Wuxia.
What is Wuxia?
Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artist in ancient China.
Let’s start with Wuxia.
What is Wuxia?
Wuxia is a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artist in ancient China.
If you read Jin Yong novels, it’s all Wuxia. Legend of the Condor Heroes, The Duke of Mount Deer, Demi Gods & Semi Devils.
From the pics
, I’m sure you noticed the costumes. This is Wuxia, this is how the cos are like. Wuxia is about martial arts & clothes need to be movable.
From the pics

Costume are usually in muted colours and tight to the body, easy to move around in, considering they are wondering around the world, fighting more often then not. Materials are often linen or cotton, unless the char happen to be rich or royalty, otherwise no silk can be seen.
In olden times, yellow & gold are the emperor colours & not to be worn by commoners. Same goes for silver as it is very difficult to produce those colours & is thus very expensive for commoners to purchase. Recent aesthetic has allowed these colours in drama but still not common.
Locations for Wuxia are much more rugged, like mountains, inns by the roadside, temples. Do bear in mind that these are martial artist that roam out & about.
Wuxia have a lot of fighting scenes, or as you know it, kungfu. Wuxia often have a lot of chars & their storyline brunch out in all directions, follow all different chars, be it the main or side chars. The reason why LoF is so nostalgic is cause it is filmed exactly the same way.
And what is Xianxia?
Xianxia is a genre of Chinese fantasy influenced by Chinese mythology, Taoism, Buddhism, Chinese martial arts & other traditional Chinese elements.
It is more fantasy than Wuxia, talking more about gods & demons, more about ‘fairy’ & cultivation.

It has reincarnation, powers, gods, realms, demons and even transformation. As a fantasy genre, it’s costumes are more towards the floaty, glamorous kind, with a lot of accessories, gold & silver, metal, wide sleeves and long skirts.
Similarly, their locations are decorated lavishly, unless they happened to be stuck in a mountain or something.
So that’s the difference. For its genre, LoF is ticking all the boxes of what’s its supposed to be. Do not mistaken Wuxia for Xianxia, and not all period dramas are the same. Many complains are about the costumes, sets and many storylines but that’s what Wuxia is about. #lof #yibo
I’ll continue later about all the historically accurate details LoF have later. I’m a bit tired
Chocolate time.

LoF crew spend a bit of time doing their research. LoF is currently based on Northern Southern Dynasties & many details in the show correspond to it. Take the tea we saw in episode 2. Look like soup right? Exactly. The tea in that period was a kind soup, with many ingredients.
It would compromise of a mixture of onions, ginger, dates, orange skins, mint leaves etc and left to boil. If one praises your tea making skills at that time, you deserves to be proud because I cannot image how awful it must taste if you’re bad in making it...
LoF also shot many scene in real locations around China & if they look fake, that’s on the director because most of the places are real locations. Many can be seen in LoF BTS with the forest, trees and lakes as their backdrop.
So is the place where Xie Yun character poster was shot. https://twitter.com/CrazyPumkin/status/1340286065072959488
The forest outside 48 strongholds is located at Kangding, the forest outside the dark jail is also a real location. Some of these locations are at a very high altitude too, above 3700. Apart from a small shot at a forest & cgi Ximo River, the rest are all shot at real locations!
As for the characters, as they have to fitted into a real history, Xie Yun who is fitted into Xiao Zhuang and the general Wang Lin are all real historical person. More info expanded in the attached thread. https://twitter.com/crazypumkin/status/1339496741192658945
Another nice details is the food. Noticed how often they ate bread? That’s because during that era, bread is their staple food instead of rice.

In ep 7, the inn was burnt and the fire put out. Noticed how they put out the fire? Yes, this is actually historical accurate.

The long pole is called ‘Jitong’, where you dip it in water, suck it up, and push it out on wherever you wanna spray. This is created around 1727 and it looks that there are several kinds of hoses created.
In Ep 7, the song Duan Jiuniang sang is called 采莲曲, Poem of The Picking Lotus. It is composed by the Emperor Yuan of Liang, Xiao Yi, who is actually the grandfather of Xiao Zhuang! In other words, Xie Yun’s grandfather in LoF!
Yes, this song exist in China history.
