Her work, often laced in sexual innuendo, broke taboos of the time. Introduced to the West thru John Balaban’s translations. The orig. Viet highlights her clever genius.

wanted to emphasize how BADASS she was. Writing abt sex was so taboo in Confucian trad. She also ridiculed the Buddhist church & the feudal state. She got away w this mostly bc of her talent & the esteem that poetry held in viet culture
