#thread - 2020 is the year I managed to find consistency with exercising at home. My key to success was to constantly mix it up! Here are some of the apps I used/influencers I followed 👇🏼
But first: a disclaimer. I’m no expert, just your average person trying to be healthy. I’ve been exercising in a structured way since 2010 so I’m confident of my form etc. I look at exercise as a mood booster & my goal is to make working out a habit (vs losing weight). Ok? Ok.
My favourite app this year was @fiton_app! The sheer no. of workouts available ensures that you never get bored. I’ve done HIIT, Pilates, Yoga, strength & barre. The paid version is ~₹1699/year and allows you to download workouts, but the free version has 99% of the features
Here’s the thing about fiton though - while the workouts are great, the trainers TALK through the workout. If this is something that annoys you, then definitely consider another app. I oscillate between loving & hating it so it’s something that impacts the quality of my workout.
My all time favourite workout app is @Freeletics . It’s only body weight exercises & adapts to your fitness level at every stage. It’s about ~₹2K/year and does require you to have some basic level of fitness (just to ensure right form). I lost my pregnancy weight w this app!
I like the Nike Training Club app too. Not personalised, but it’s free so I won’t complain. Speaking of free, YouTube has some of the best fitness resources. Fitness Blender on YouTube has fantastic HIIT workouts that are super fun + challenging irrespective of fitness level.
I also did the Chloe Ting 2 weeks abs challenge because I’m #basic like that. It was very effective & also a ton of fun because they were very short workouts that were put together. Wouldn’t recommend it for absolute beginners cause some of those moves were brutal.
Finally my current favourite fitness YouTuber is Heather Robertson! She’s so so underrated. Doesn’t talk, crazy good workouts, GREAT music and it’s all free?! She has a 12 week program which is really well done (I’m doing it right now) but again, not for absolute beginners.
Idk if you can tell but I like fitness influencers who don’t give too much gyaan and aren’t aggressive. I cannot deal with NEVER SURRENDER or PAIN IS NECESSARY type caps lock messaging even if I am in actual pain. Again, personal preference.
Also working out at home is really challenging cause there’s actually no one to hold you accountable other than yourself. So if you’re low on motivation, try to rope in friends to do challenges with you (I did Chloe Ting w a few colleagues).
Also don’t be afraid to change it up the moment you’re even slightly sick of something. I stopped HIIT and did just long walks for a while cause I was bored from the jumping jacks. Then I got bored of walking and learned basic animal flow. And now I’m back to HIIT.
Another tip is to use some kind of tracker to measure progress in a visual way. Whether it’s crossing days off in a calendar or keeping a journal, trackers keep you on track! I used to use a chest strap called myzone that my gym gave me. Now I’m on the Apple Watch, which I LOVE.
I shared all this because exercise has been the one thing that has kept my sanity in check through the entirety of this fuck all year so do not underestimate the power of physical exercise on your mental health. It really makes a difference to your day!
