To all those who matched this week, congratulations!
But this is a post about #failure. To those of you who didn’t match, I understand the gut wrenching, stomach dropping, life-altering fear and horror of that moment.
I did not match into my second fellowship.

I did not match into my second fellowship.
Instead, I cried and barely finished clinic.
A word of advice for any future trainee... maybe look at board exam results and match results when you’re not in the middle of a clinical responsibility.

I then gathered my thoughts, and approached my mentors for some tough conversations.
The most important aspect of any failure is what you do with it. Some soul searching is usually in order.

4/ And talk to your mentors. This is not a burden to bear on your own but to work though with some help.
My story ends well. I was funded with a T32 for research and I was able to complete a PICU fellowship. I would never have known about that option on my own.

5/ I’m fortunate to have had champions along the way. Tim Cornell, @mike_quasney, @jcharpie, Nick Lukacs, @MGaies, @mgoschu, @GEOwens66, @CarenGoldberg13 to name a few
After fellowship, I chose my way. I have ended up in exactly the right place. I love what I do and where I am.

6/ That failure has made me stronger; more confident in my path.
So to those of you who are in that place right now, take a day to cry.
Then tomorrow, get up and go find your way. You’ll only be stronger.
