So, I would like to be “real” for a minute. For those of you who have been with me since December, you likely remember how depressed I was last year after TROS. It didn’t help that I most likely had COVID, but you know hindsight is 20/20. But I was sad.
But somewhere around February I realized I could be happy. I could choose to accept what I didn’t like and move forward. In essence, “I let the past die”. And that was my choice, to go against the trend to be angry. It wasn’t healthy. I genuinely felt the impact of it.
COVID has been a nightmare. The world is tremendously awful and fiction has been a god send. Getting lost in new Star Wars content has been a mental health life saver for me. I feel happier than I have in five years because of Star Wars and the community I’ve found here.
But it hurts like hell to see tweet after tweet of people saying that the people liking Star Wars now are just “shills,” that we just want “free stuff,” or that we’re no better than “40 year old fanboys.” STOP. I know people hate when people project onto you. Don’t do it too.
Take a step back and recognize that you’re angry. I’ve been there. I know the feeling. Slash and burn. Take no prisoners. Burn it all down. But there’s still people in the house, stop trying to set it on fire. Anger can 100% ruin it for you and sometimes distance helps.
And since I guess this needs to be said... This is just my opinion. I’ve been in fandom for 15 odd years. I’ve been the worst type of fan myself and I’ve been angry and let it ruin me. Your opinions are all valid, but so are mine. So are everyone who is happy.
You don’t have to put down others to justify your own displeasure. Take a step back, focus on what you do love, and don’t lash out at people who are just enjoying it for what it is. No one is better for it, no one is somehow smarter or cooler for hating things.
This is just my opinions. You’re all right to be upset, but that doesn’t mean happy people are wrong for it or deserve to see snide takes about their enjoyment. It sucks the life out of things. Again, just me and my own opinion from years of putting up with this from both sides.
