I just felt like it’s high time I shed some light on where the anti-black self hatred within the Dominican Republic stems from.

Former dictator of the Dominican Republic; Rafael Trujillo who ruled from 1930 up until 1961 when he was assasinated is the reason why many Dominican's suffer from self hatred and have animosity towards pure breed black people.

During the 1930's, Rafael Trujillo accepted Spaniard and Jewish immigrants into the Dominican Republic following its civil war to help whiten DR’s population. He encouraged afro-Dominican's to marry the Spaniard immigrants and vice versa for "ethnic cleansing".

Rafael favored the white refugees over afro-Dominican inhabitants.

He helped further institutionalize racial discrimination policy targeting Haitian's called "Antihaitianismo" created by Spaniards who took over the island, this policy targeted dark skin afro-Dominican's also.

Around October 1937 is when Rafael Trujillo carried out a massacre against Haitian's living in the Cibao region of northwestern DR.

Approximately 35,000 Haitian's were killed in that massacre. It is referred to as "el corte" (the cutting) by Haitian's.

Rafael Trujillo even went as far as filling universities, hospitals etc. with light skin / white people to create a white presence within professional environments.

Reports have said that he tried changing the Merengue dance so that it could look more like the European Waltz.

Blackness has been deemed dirty, unworthy and has been associated with poverty for many years within the Dominican Republic.

The lack of dark skin black people within professional areas of their society has contributed to breeding this collective self hatred by Afro-Dominicans.
