The U.S. should be seeking ways to engage more directly with Russian society. These consulates help. Some of my best trips in Russia as U.S. Ambassador were to Ekaterinburg and Vladivostok. 3/
In Ekaterinburg, the press followed me everywhere. They were eager for interaction. 4/
And we had a fantastic team at the consulate in Ekaterinburg ! 5/
In Vladivostok, several hundred people packed an auditorium, to come hear me talk, including this WWII veteran who had never met an American and wouldn't let me go ! 6/
Public diplomacy works. We need more of it, not less. Our consulates in Russia help to promote public diplomacy. 7/ END THREAD
