2 different people we pitched on working w/ @representbyomv creatives announced this week that they are launching identical models (using our exact language) changed only to ensure the power stays status quo & $$$ from emerging creators’ work goes in the pockets of gatekeepers.
I’m thrilled if someone wants to take our model. But to take it and remove the protections/ benefits for emerging creators absolutely fucking sucks. We created it to get writers & filmmakers PAID for brand work and to get them INVESTMENT in their film/TV projects.
This has long been our challenge: creative industries love access to new talent, but no one wants to risk having to share the $$$$ with them. Half the “emerging talent” programs around town are just a way to access curated talent (and their ideas/work) w/o reps or lawyers.
I worked in major studios for YEARS. Often the only difference between a groundbreaking film and a film that never makes it off the page is $$$$.
Filmmaking giants are who they are because someone invested in their talent. That does not make them the most talented filmmakers.
The deficit framing for underrepresented talent is a smokescreen for existing gatekeepers to pretend like they are necessary. You really want to make “impact” in creative fields? Fund marginalized creators w/o curation by middle-aged white folks.
Stop asking emerging talent to get celeb attachments before bringing you their projects. We all know that, if necessary to secure budget, that shit can happen on the other side of a deal. Stop looking to the same 10 people to co-sign on a project’s value.
Stop spending millions on your wokeness branding and use the $$$$ for a development fund for groups like @TheJTCList or for companies like @seedandspark to invest in meaningful support for creatives.
So many conversations happening about “driving culture” with zero awareness of who is in the driver’s seat. So much money wasted on replicating work that’s been done, just to claim credit.
If you are interested in supporting the 3000+ @representbyomv creators by investing in them or hiring them OR you want to support other companies and nonprofits doing great work in this space- my DMs are open. I’m happy to make intros, all day long.
