Why I am worried for Eminem's career and legacy (a long ass thread)
please retweet it guys
First off I wanna say for context that these are my current ratings of his last 4 projects:
Revival- 2.5
Kamikaze- 5.5
MTBMB- 8
Side B- 5.5
Also I'm a huge fan and he's the guy who introduced me to rap.
Tbh, 3 of Em's last 4 projects are in his bottom 3 imo and idk if I still have hope for him to actually put out something great anymore, that is fine because he's just having fun but I do think just ignoring critiques is bad for his career and distances himself from the culture.
A few of these that I've seen commonly and he hasn't changed at all:
While pretty cool at first and kinda funny to see Em use, the adlibs are way too common in his songs now
His harmonizing singing is bad most of the time and he should use it way less
While he can and does sometime sound cool on trap beats, making a full projects with almost nothing but them is not a good decision, especially since he tends to recycle his subject matter on these kind of songs
And finally, his dysfunctional relationship songs have become very formulaic and have one of three formulas:
A diss to an ex/women as a whole (example: Farewell)
A lusty relationship without love (Love Game)
A drug/hip hop metaphor (Never Love Again)
If there are two things he could do to do to revive his career imo it's:
1. take his time and make his next album an actual concept album, not just with the title and some of the beats but also lyrically
2. start doing rap/producer collab (RTJ style) albums or BME albums
Smaller things he could also do that'll improve his albums:
1. start featuring more rappers, specifically big names like Kendrick, Cole etc or legends in the genre like Black Thought or Andre 3000. He did this on MTBMB and this is one of the best parts of it.
2. Get more varied production, a specific bad memory I had from Side B is my first listen to Book Of Rhymes, which IS a good song, but it has a Dj Premier feature.
Now I'm not very familiar of Preemo's work but I know him from a few songs and the Prhyme album which I loved.
I hit play on the song and expected the album to switch up from the more trappy production style we've heard so far, but nope.
Apparently all Preemo did on the song was do scratches.
I can count on 1 hand the amount of old school beats on both versions of MTBMB, and that's bad.
3. shorten his albums, BY A LOT.
This man is in the game for 24 years already, the man isn't creating a TPAB or anything.
Without a few songs, albums like Kamikaze or Side B could've easily been good, and Kamikaze is one of his shortest albums.
One of my favorite albums of the year only has 6 rapping tracks, and I've enjoyed every second of them, albums like KSG or Daytona are also amazing examples of how great short albums can be, and it's not like Em cares about streaming numbers at all.
Saying haters will hate isn't a bad mentality, but not when you constantly ignore critics, and even your fans.
At this point, Em has distanced himself from the culture so much, that the popular majority dislikes him, and as a fan that hurts to see.
