Today we were thrilled to announce the 2020 @HarvardGovernm1 Faculty Mentoring Award went to (twitter-less) Iain Johnston. If you don't know Iain, here is a few things you should know [a thread].
In the aftermath of revelations about sexual harassment in our department, Iain created a new position for himself in the department - Title IX Liaison. He pursued extra Title IX training and became the point of reference for issues around gender-based harassment.
He has advocated in @HarvardGSAS for additional resources for graduate-student parents, including leave policies and childcare. His academic credentials are one thing, but it's hard to measure the impact he's had on his students as people. Some quotes from nominations:
"At the onset of the closures due to the pandemic, Iain was the first to reach out to me and check-in with my personal and academic well-being."
"He epitomizes the kind of scholar and human being that all of us aspire to be."
"He epitomizes the kind of scholar and human being that all of us aspire to be."
"He has helped me develop my scholarly identity, and, perhaps even more importantly, the confidence to function effectively in the academic sphere..He is extremely kind and patient, and an inspirational teacher and mentor. "
"He demonstrates that self-care is something you have to prioritize both in word and, if I’m inferring correctly from the guitar in his Zoom background, in action."
"His kindness and generosity are a model for all."
"His kindness and generosity are a model for all."
Dozens of us including @mchorowitz @SheenaGreitens @NarangVipin @tcjost @jrenshon @naimagreenriley @EBKania @amycatalinac have all benefitted from his generous mentorship. It was a treat to see it recognized.
